Crystal Meth : Can it be Stopped?
Interview with Cheryl: Will’s Mother
What was Will like when he was young? When he was young, he was energetic. He had a lot of life in him. He was doing pretty good in school. He had gotten some place and he was very happy. He was looking forward to a future. That all changed. He started using pot and afterwards got into a few other drugs and alcohol. |

Do you know how he was first introduced to crystal meth?
I think it was just the people that he was hanging out with and the things in his life that had happened. He grew up in a disfunctional family and he went in the same direction.
He started running the streets a lot. In high school actually, that's when I think it first started with the crystal meth. Then he started selling drugs, in fact crack and cocaine, just to support his crystal meth habit.
It got more and more and more. As he used more of the crystal meth, he became angrier and withdrawn. To the point where he was so angry, so messed up, that he had withdrawn from the family. It was a mess.
What is the worst thing he did while on crystal meth?
The last year or so was crazy. I recall one morning that I was sleeping, it was probably around 5:00 a.m., and Will came into my room, standing over me screaming. I woke up to this. He demanded drugs or money. I said, "There are no drugs. What are you talking about?" He starting screaming at me, demanding any money I had. The look in his eyes was one that I had never seen before. I've never been afraid of my son, but I honestly thought in that moment that he would hurt me. I gave him my money. A while later, he came back, crying and apologizing for what he had done, but that's what this drug does. It changes one's personality, from the child you know, to an aggressive person.
He started to get involved in crime. I would tell him, continuously, that I did not want to bury him. I really thought that this was what I was going to do. I believe that this is a parent's worse nightmare, to know that their child's life holds by a thread. That's where he was. He had become psychotic. I remember he used to take the telephone receiver and bang it against his head, for whatever reason that I do not know.
He would think that anybody making some sort of motion on the street, just scratching their nose, was a signal that someone was calling the police. He was continuously looking over his shoulder.

How did he eventually overcome his He went into a program, a program called Narconon. It was a fight. He was continuously fighting against the program. He had a very difficult time trying to get clean and straight. I don't think that any other program would have worked, to be quite honest, because of the techniques that are used there to clean the body of drugs. He did a detoxification program while on this program, and even though it was a bit difficult for him, he got through it. He eventually was clean. |
I hadn't seen him like that for years look that good. The white of his eyes were white, they weren't discoloured. The smile. I guess the smile is the biggest thing. He was back to being Will, the guy before the drugs. I had my son back.
