The Substance Abuse Scene in Cornwall, Ontario and the Rehabilitation Options
Cornwall may seem unassuming to other parts of the world, but a quick look at the news brings the substance abuse issue into focus. On June 13, 2011, police raided a reserve near Cornwall, recovering drugs as well as information on ties to larger operations. It resulted in over 30 arrests. Sadly, this is only one recent news story which brings Cornwall into the spotlight concerning drugs. In the noted raid, marijuana and other drugs were stopped from being transported into the United States.
The Cornwall Free News reported in April of 2010 about the pharmaceutical issues plaguing the area. Not only is drug addiction to prescription drugs a problem, but other involvement with pharmaceutical companies was brought to light. Not only in Cornwall, but globally there has been an outcry over the growing number of unethical and deadly involvements discovered with drug companies. Ontario substance abuse just bears proof of the problem.
It isn’t just the crime that is alarming. The Standard Freeholder reported that "Oxycodone abuse has been proven to be the cause or a likely suspect in the deaths of nine people across Cornwall over the past 20 months". Too many citizens of Cornwall are being killed or injured due to drug addictions and alcoholism. Police have been working with rehab centers to help find solutions.
The drug scene, sadly, is alive and well in Cornwall. So is the effort to stop it.

Not only rehabilitation, but education is needed to begin to make a difference in the Cornwall drug scene. Parents, teachers, employers and others need to be aware of the drug problem, as well as what can be done about it. Treatment is available for drug addictions and alcoholism. It is often friends and loved ones who first reach out for help, and because of this, more people are able to break free from addictions.
Drug treatment may not seem appealing to those who have addictions, but it is far better than the alternative, which is ultimately death. For many, police involvement precedes the untimely death due to addiction. Regardless of how long someone has been addicted, or to what substance they are addicted, help is possible and available. Headlines concerning substance abuse may not go away soon, but getting drug treatment can keep you or a loved one from being named in one.
